After popularity nosedive, Senator Collins is in for “a very close race”

The election handicappers at Sabato’s Crystal Ball have officially changed their rating of Maine’s U.S. Senate race from Leans Republican to Toss Up. This shift comes after Senator Susan Collins surpassed Mitch McConnell earlier this year to become the most unpopular Senator in the country.

After voting to put health care for Mainers at risk, confirming extreme right wing judges to lifetime seats on the federal bench, and failing to hold a town hall for more than 20 years, Senator Collins has seen her popularity plummet. Now, she’s running from her record and refusing to say whether she’s even supporting President Trump’s reelection.

“This rating change reflects what we’re seeing on the ground all over the state: Senator Collins has lost support because of her failure to be a truly independent voice for Maine,” said Maine Democratic Party Executive Director Lisa Roberts. “After years of choosing to put Mitch McConnell and Donald Trump ahead of her own constituents, Collins has seen her popularity and her chances of reelection collapse. Maine voters are ready to send Collins packing and elect a Democrat to the Senate who will put our state first.”

Maine’s U.S. Senate primary will be held on June 9th. You can read more about all three Democrats running here.
