Augusta, Maine – As Republicans gather for the Maine GOP Convention this weekend, one thing is clear: Susan Collins is running on the same record that has made her one of the most unpopular senators in the country.
Maine Democratic Party Executive Director Devon Murphy-Anderson released the following statement:
“From helping Donald Trump advance his extreme MAGA agenda, to gutting health care for thousands of Mainers, to paving the way for the overturning of Roe v. Wade, Susan Collins has spent the last 30 years putting Washington Republicans and her corporate donors ahead of Maine’s working families. And, us Mainers are fed up – and that’s why she enters 2026 in the weakest position of her career.”
Here are five things Mainers should remember about Susan Collins and the record she’ll be forced to defend in 2026.
5 Things to Know:
- Susan Collins is facing record-low approval ratings and is in a weaker position now than at any point in her previous reelection campaigns.
- Collins faces “lousy,” “record low” approval numbers that continue to sink and an overwhelming majority of Mainers believe she doesn't deserve a sixth term. Reports have already highlighted “just how much danger Collins is in as she faces re-election in Maine in 2026.”
- Susan Collins is a reliable vote for Donald Trump’s extreme agenda.
- Collins is a “regular deciding vote” on “important Republican policies” and nominations – voting with Trump over 96% of the time – and her “protest votes” have been observed “as strategic as they are symbolic,” with her showing “independence only when it doesn’t really make a difference.” Prominent Republicans have said she has “never let the Republicans down” and is a “team player” in helping move forward GOP priorities.
- Susan Collins helped gut Mainers’ health care to fund tax breaks for billionaires.
- Collins was a “key” “pivotal vote” to advance the GOP tax bill that is forcing 61,000 Mainers to lose their health care and shut down rural Maine hospitals in order to pay for tax giveaways to billionaires.
- Collins refused to protect Mainers from massive health care premium hikes.
- Collins’ refused to extend ACA tax credits, causing 50,000 Mainers to see their premiums “double, triple or even quadruple.”
- Collins helped overturn Roe v. Wade – and she’s still attacking reproductive freedom.
- Collins was a decisive vote to confirm Supreme Court Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch who went on to overturn Roe v. Wade and she continues to “rubber-stamp” anti-choice judges who pose threats to reproductive freedom nationally.
