Municipalities all over Maine are still facing crushing budget deficits that are forcing layoffs and cuts to essential services. But this week in Washington, instead of working to secure federal relief for struggling state and local governments, Senator Susan Collins spent her time confirming eight new Trump judges to lifetime positions in the federal judiciary, including two judges who hold virulent anti-choice views.

In the spring, Senator Collins acknowledged that without more federal aid, Maine communities would be forced to make drastic cuts to critical services and she promised to fight to prevent layoffs and cuts to essential programs. But after months of delay, she failed to secure even a single dollar of aid for states and municipalities in the coronavirus aid proposal her party rolled out this summer, and then last week she voted for a stunt relief bill that contained no federal relief for Maine communities. Returning to Maine with no progress on passing additional relief, Collins has once again by her own standard “failed the American people.”

“Senator Collins has made her priorities crystal clear: even when Maine communities are suffering, she puts Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell first,” said Maine Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Marra. “Maine communities need more relief now, but after 24 years in Washington, Collins isn’t working for us anymore.”
