With less than 100 days left until Maine’s gubernatorial election, Paul LePage has been escalating his desperate attempts to push lies about Governor Mills and her record. However, according to letter writers from around the state, the smears are not working—Maine voters are seeing through LePage’s lies and understand that Governor Mills is the candidate that is actually fighting for them:
Jake Hawkins, Arundel: [LePage] says his administration achieved the 2006 legislative requirement of funding 55 percent of public school costs. This is emphatically not true…Gov. Mills, on the other hand, has achieved 55 percent for fiscal year 2022 and 55.06 percent for fiscal year 2023…Not bad for the “big spending liberal Democrats,” who, by the way, managed a budget that was also able to give back $850 apiece to Maine citizens.
D. Allan Kerr, Kittery: Wingnuts from out of state — and a few inside as well, I’m sure — will desperately try to portray Mills as some kind of elitist out-of-touch radical milquetoast…Good luck with that when it comes to Mills. She’s a former freaking DA from Farmington. She’s tried murder cases, she’s prosecuted drug dealers. She’s taken on Wall Street and won, she’s challenged billion-dollar pharmaceutical companies and won….We want leaders who aren’t afraid to make the tough call in times of crisis, and that’s what Mills has done throughout the pandemic. Now her predecessor, a bigmouthed buffoon in a Florida tan, has returned to Maine to try to take back his old job.
Maddy Corson, Yarmouth: I am a Medicaid recipient, and Gov. Mills’ MaineCare expansion facilitated my access to treatment for chronic illness. I am a young student, and Gov. Mills’ free community college initiative for pandemic-era students gives me hope for the future of affordable higher education. I am a woman, and Gov. Mills’ promise to uphold the tenets of Roe v. Wade assures me that my rights to reproductive care in Maine will not be revoked. These policies have not only secured a greater quality of life for Mainers now and in the future, but have also saved lives – including my own.
Anne Brooks, Edgecomb: As a mother and a grandmother I am proud to live in a state that recognizes and protects the right to vote and a woman’s right to reproductive freedom. Just two of the rights that Governor Mills works to protect. Governor Mills supports education. For the first time in 10 years the state of Maine met its obligation to fund 55% of public education when Governor Mills signed the budget she proposed. In an increasingly bombastic partisan climate, I appreciate that Governor Mills leadership is non-inflammatory and focuses on doing the best for all of the people of Maine. Janet Mills is a true public servant.
Alden Sproul, Bristol: I am the fund manager for the Ecumenical Council on Homelessness Prevention in Damariscotta…The effect of the $850 that Governor Mills has authorized will help reduce the demand for our services as we clearly saw last year. Through her efforts and attention, homelessness in Lincoln County is being reduced.
