Collins’ “courage” is AWOL: she has spent 662 days refusing to tell Mainers the truth about her support for Trump

Today, Donald Trump blamed Gold Star families for giving him coronavirus, continuing his years-long streak of insulting service members and their families, disparaging veterans, and mocking fallen soldiers who sacrificed their lives for this nation. It’s been almost a month since Donald Trump called Americans who had died serving our country in the military “losers” and “suckers,” but Senator Collins has still refused to condemn his disgusting remarks about our nation’s heroes.

Back in 2016, Senator Collins cited Donald Trump’s insults towards veterans and Gold Star families as one of the primary reasons that "led [her] to the inescapable conclusion that Mr. Trump lacks the temperament, self-discipline and judgment required to be president." She said that ultimately Trump’s attacks on the family of a fallen soldier were “the tipping point” in her decision to not support him.

Donald Trump hasn’t changed—but Senator Collins has.

Just last week, Senator Collins boasted that her stance in 2016 was “courageous” but she refuses to demonstrate anything close to that “courage” today as Donald Trump continues the exact same behavior she once found disqualifying. She’s spent the last 662 days refusing to say whether she supports his re-election, dodging questions from Mainers and reporters at every turn—even after voting with him 94% of the time and providing him with key votes for his legislative agenda.

“Four years ago, Senator Collins said she could not support Donald Trump because of his insulting behavior to service members and their families. Since then, he’s continued his disgusting attacks on our nation’s heroes and she’s been a stalwart ally for him in the Senate, voting in lockstep with his agenda and refusing to hold him accountable,” said Maine Democratic Party Executive Director Lisa Roberts. “And today, as Donald Trump yet again attacks Gold Star families, Senator Collins is still refusing to tell Mainers whether she believes he’s fit to serve as Commander in Chief for four more years.”
