Maine Democratic Chair Drew Gattine, issued the following statement:

Yesterday, Mainers voted overwhelmingly for Democratic candidates up and down the ballot. Our candidates surpassed pundits’ expectations and are ready to go back to work to fight for Maine people – in Augusta and in Washington D.C.

In the race for governor, Governor Janet Mills led the ticket to a decisive victory, receiving even greater support in many communities than in 2018. Under Governor Mills, Maine expanded access to health care, delivered long-overdue property tax relief, finally met the 55 percent funding threshold for Maine’s public schools, safeguarded our reproductive rights, provided one of the strongest inflation relief measures in the nation, and so much more. Yet, even in the face of a global health crisis, Governor Mills delivered real results for the Maine people. Voters clearly recognized the progress Maine has made under her leadership.

Congresswoman Chellie Pingree won a landslide victory in Maine’s first congressional district. In her eighth term, I have no doubt that she will build on her impeccable track record of success and continue to fight for Maine families, farmers, fisherman, and workers. We are still waiting on final results for Congressman Jared Golden’s race, but the current returns are highly encouraging, even if the race goes to a ranked choice runoff tabulation. We look forward to learning the final outcome in the coming days, once every vote has been counted.

With regard to the Maine State Legislature, Democrats will retain decisive control of both chambers. As of this morning, in the State Senate, Democrats have won at least 22 seats, maintaining our record majority in that chamber. We re-elected every incumbent State Senator and even flipped the Waterville/Winslow-area senate district for the first time in a decade. In the State House, Democrats are on track to maintain and possibly even expand our majority in the lower chamber. Mainers voted for doctors, for social workers, for small business owners, for parents – for a House of Representatives that is truly representative of this great state.
