Collins has taken a public position in every presidential election since 1996, but this year she’s refused to admit her support for Trump for the last 620 days

Tonight, Donald Trump will formally accept his party’s nomination, but Mainers will still be in the dark about whether Senator Susan Collins is voting for him. For the last 620 days, she has refused to tell the truth about her support for the President.

Senator Collins’ refusal to answer this question is unprecedented in her history as a public official. She took a public position in every presidential election since she first ran for Senate in 1996, but this year Collins has made a political calculation that her reelection prospects are stronger if Mainers don’t know how she’s voting.

Collins has invented myriad excuses for why she refuses to be honest with Mainers about her presidential vote--but independent reporting has found that her reasoning just “doesn’t add up.” And earlier this week, Maine GOP Chair Demi Kouzounas confirmed that Collins and Trump “support each other.”

“After having voted with Trump 94% of the time, Senator Collins thinks she can fool Mainers with her silence,” said Maine Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Marra. “Mainers expect our leaders to be honest and forthright about the issues that matter to our communities. It’s long past time for Senator Collins to own up to the truth: she’s all in on Trump.”
