While Maine’s small businesses struggle, Collins takes a victory lap

Last week, a New York Times report warned that the Paycheck Protection Program is a growing political liability for Senator Susan Collins. Today, Collins launched a new ad taking credit again for the program that has doled out millions to private jet owners and businesses with close ties to Trump but has left too many small businesses in Maine behind.

Despite multiple polls showing that the majority of Americans are concerned about PPP funds intended for small business flowing to big corporations, Collins has spent nearly half a million dollars on campaign ads about the program.

Collins bent over backwards to ensure that the big hotel and restaurant chains that have donated to her campaign would be eligible to receive PPP funds, but when small business owners in Maine spoke out about the problems with the program, their concerns fell on deaf ears.

“In yet another deceptive ad, Senator Collins is papering over the significant problems with the PPP to mislead voters about her record,” said Maine Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Marra. “In reality, Collins made sure that the PPP would work for big corporate interests and ignored small business owners here in Maine who have struggled to get the support they need.”
