Westbrook, MAINE - U.S. Senator Collins’ vote today in favor of rules intended to maintain the neutrality of the internet as a tool that should be available to everyone highlighted once again the stark contrast with the other Republican member of Maine’s Congressional Delegation, Congressman Bruce Poliquin. Poliquin remains the only member of the delegation that supports the repeal of net neutrality, voting in favor of a measure that limited the FCC’s ability to preserve it.
Maine Democratic Party Chairman Phil Bartlett issued the following statement:
“Why is Congressman Poliquin the only member of Maine’s Congressional delegation who doesn’t seem to understand the importance of net neutrality, particularly when it comes to rural Maine? Ending net neutrality only allows internet service providers to put their profits and bottom-line ahead of the interests of people. The internet is a fundamental driver of the economy and educational opportunities, and we should be working to preserve that - not put it up for sale to the highest bidder. Congressman’s Poliquin’s support for ending net neutrality is indicative of his poor judgment, which is not only out of step with the rest of Maine’s Congressional delegation but with the majority of Maine people themselves.”
Maine’s Senators Susan Collins and Angus King both support net neutrality, along with Democratic Congresswoman Chellie Pingree who just yesterday called on Republican Speaker Paul Ryan to allow the House of Representatives to vote on a resolution she has cosponsored that will overturn the FCC’s controversial decision to repeal the rules.
