Collins has already requested an absentee ballot to vote in the presidential election, but continues to dodge questions about who she’s supporting
Thirteen days remain until the 2020 election, and Senator Susan Collins has her absentee ballot—but she still has not told Mainers whether or not she will be voting to re-elect Donald Trump. It’s clear now that she plans on trying to maintain her streak of 675 consecutive days of refusing to be honest with Mainers all the way until Election Day.
Even though Collins has made a political calculation to spend the entirety of this election cycle hiding her support for Trump from Mainers, her record tells the story that she doesn’t want Mainers to hear:
-
According to CQ, Senator Collins has voted with Trump 94% of the time.
-
Trump has said he’s “100%” behind Collins’ campaign and has said he hopes “she does well.”
-
Senator Collins has consistently helped shield Trump from accountability, including voting a dozen times to block witnesses and evidence before she voted to acquit him on all charges in the Senate impeachment trial.
-
Senator Collins has been a critical vote for Trump’s priorities in the Senate, from backing the GOP tax giveaway to corporations and the wealthy to voting to confirm every single one of his judicial nominees in 2017 and 2018.
-
Maine GOP Chair Demi Kouzounas has confirmed Collins and Trump “both support each other.”
“Senator Collins may have spent this entire election trying to avoid telling Mainers that she supports Donald Trump, but we’ve gotten the message loud and clear,” said Maine Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Marra. “No matter how many more times she ducks the question over the next 13 days, she can’t hide from her record of supporting Trump and his cronies at every turn.”
