In New Interview, Senator Collins Reinforces What Mainers Already Know: She’s Changed

In a new interview with Politico, Senator Susan Collins unleashed a series of attacks in an attempt to salvage her flailing campaign while making clear that she is the only one responsible for her tanking popularity.

After having voted with Donald Trump 94% of the time and taking $6 million in contributions from corporate PACs, Collins has become the most unpopular Senator in the country. But instead of listening to Mainers and working to rebuild trust, Collins has chosen to lash out at anyone seeking to hold her accountable for the votes that she’s taken putting Donald Trump and special interests ahead of Mainers.

Collins has chosen to run a scorched earth campaign with the backing of millions of dollars of outside money from corporate special interests. Her strategy is to claim any criticisms of her are “falsehoods” and refuse to answer tough questions. But while Collins decries critical assessments of her own record, she has no trouble deploying desperate and false attacks against Speaker Sara Gideon.

“The only person who has destroyed Senator Collins’ reputation is Senator Collins,” said Maine Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Marra. “After 24 years in Washington, she’s not working for us anymore, and Mainers have noticed. Now, she’s resorting to even more desperate attacks to try to paper over her own failure to fight for Maine.”
