Augusta, Maine – Maine Democratic Party Executive Director Devon Murphy-Anderson released the following statement on Sen. Susan Collins announcing her campaign for reelection:
“Susan Collins has spent the last 30 years betraying Maine, from stripping Mainers’ affordable health care, to casting the decisive vote to confirm Supreme Court justices who overturned Roe v. Wade, to voting with Donald Trump 94% of the time. She now faces some of the lowest approval ratings of her career because Mainers see through her political games and fake shows of concern. In November, we will reject her at the ballot box.”
Here is what Collins faces:
Collins faces “lousy,” “record low” approval numbers that continue to sink and an overwhelming majority of Mainers believe she doesn't deserve a sixth term. Reports have already highlighted “just how much danger Collins is in as she faces re-election in Maine in 2026.”
Collins’ refused to extend ACA tax credits, causing 50,000 Mainers to see their premiums “double, triple or even quadruple.”
Collins is a “regular deciding vote” on “important Republican policies” and nominations – voting with Trump over 94% of the time – and her “protest votes” have been observed “as strategic as they are symbolic,” with her showing “independence only when it doesn’t really make a difference.” Prominent Republicans have said she has “never let the Republicans down” and is a “team player” in helping move forward GOP priorities.
Mainers have repeatedly criticized and protested Collins for ignoring constituent concerns, refusing to stand up to the Trump administration and for failing to meet the “standard she set” in her 2020 campaign when she promised to use her power and seniority to protect Maine.
Collins was a decisive vote to confirm Supreme Court Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch who went on to overturn Roe v Wade and she continues to “rubber-stamp” anti-choice judges who pose threats to reproductive freedom nationally.
Collins was a “key” “pivotal vote” to advance the GOP tax bill that is forcing 61,000 Mainers to lose their health care and shut down rural Maine hospitals in order to pay for tax giveaways to billionaires.
Collins has a “decades-long record of voting to cut Medicaid and Medicare,” and has “voted over a dozen times to repeal or undermine the Affordable Care Act.”
Collins has doubled-down and offered “no regrets” on her votes to confirm controversial Trump officials and judicial nominees who are inflicting harm on Mainers, including Brett Kavanaugh, RFK Jr. and OMB Director Russ Vought.
