Before the polls open and Maine voters begin casting ballots for their preferred presidential candidate, Maine Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Marra and Congresswoman Chellie Pingree released the following statements expressing confidence in the state’s first presidential primary since 2000:

Maine Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Marra:

“With Donald Trump and Susan Collins on the ballot this year, the stakes for Mainers in 2020 couldn’t be higher. Following the 2016 election, the Democratic National Committee, under Chair Tom Perez’s leadership, encouraged states to use primaries to reform the Democratic Party’s presidential nominating process. The Maine Democratic Party advocated for these reforms to make it easier for eligible Mainers to participate in our democratic process, and we are grateful that our state leaders had the foresight to enact legislation that makes voting more accessible and convenient.”

Congresswoman Chellie Pingree:

“I believe that we have a responsibility to protect our democratic elections, which is why I’ve been fighting in Congress to remove any barriers to the ballot box and preserve our fragile democratic institutions. I’m proud that Maine’s state leaders took measures to switch our state to a presidential primary to make our democratic process even more accessible for voters and ensure every eligible Mainer has the chance to cast their vote and have it counted.”
