Following tonight’s State of the State Address by Governor Janet Mills, Maine Democratic Party Chair Drew Gattine released the following statement:

“These last few years have held unprecedented challenges for our state. Yet, despite the headwinds, Governor Mills and Democrats in the legislature have forged progress. Thanks to Gov. Mills’ commitment to work with Democrats, Republicans, and people across our state, Maine is tackling the biggest issues we face. From her nation-leading response to the pandemic to her commitment to expand health care access, tonight’s address by the Governor laid out not just how much we’ve accomplished so far, but how much progress we will make in the next year.

“Returning nearly half of the state’s budget surplus to Maine people will provide relief to those struggling with rising costs. And new programs to relieve student debt, reduce the cost of attending community college, and ensure high-speed internet access represent historic investments in the people of the state of Maine. These ambitious new plans only add to Governor Mills’ record of delivering unprecedented progress for this state. After the previous administration’s eight years of chaos and poor management, Gov. Mills has not just righted the ship but has us moving forward at record speeds.

“Of course, as Gov. Mills said, it is the resilience and hard work of Mainers that has made this progress possible. We couldn’t agree more. We look forward to working with Gov. Mills to build on the work we’ve done and ensure a bright future is available for all Maine people.”
