In observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Maine Democratic Party Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, & Belonging Committee Chair Ellie Sato released the following statement:

“Today, we remember and celebrate the remarkable life and work of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a revolutionary leader of the civil rights movement. During his life, Rev. Dr. King wielded nonviolence as a powerful tool to confront white supremacy and racist systems, win political power, and fight for the fundamental freedoms of Black Americans.

“Rev. Dr. King’s dream is the American promise – that we are all created equal. Yet to this day economic equality and access to justice remain disproportionately out of reach for those in marginalized and disadvantaged communities, especially Black Americans. It is up to us as Mainers to come together to confront and change the systems that divide us. Today – and every day – we must raise our voices and lift our hands to work towards achieving the vision of full racial equity described by Rev. Dr. King.”
