Maine Democratic Party Announces Candidates Competing in the 2020 Democratic Senate Primary

Augusta, ME – The Maine Democratic Party today announced four candidates, Speaker Sara Gideon, Bre Kidman, Ross LaJeunesse, and Betsy Sweet, are competing in the Democratic Primary for the United States Senate. The winner of the primary election, taking place on June 9, 2020, will face incumbent Senator Susan Collins in Maine’s United States Senate Election on November 3, 2020.

“There’s so much at stake in 2020, including affordable access to health care, a healthy environment, and the ability to work one job for a living wage. But we won’t be able to deliver on these and many more important issues if Democrats don’t retake the United States Senate,” said Kathleen Marra, Chair of the Maine Democratic Party. “Maine is leading a movement. Every path to taking back the Senate runs through our state. That’s why I’m honored to introduce our outstanding candidates for the Democratic nomination, one of whom will defeat Susan Collins next November."

The Maine Democratic Party recently announced that Speaker Gideon, Kidman, LaJeunesse, and Sweet will join Governor Janet Mills on December 18, 2019 for the Blue Wave Gala (tickets can be purchased at Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from all four Senate candidates for the first time.

“The primary process is important to a healthy political climate, which is why the Maine Democratic Party is committed to remaining neutral in contested primaries,” Marra continued. “In the coming months, I look forward to hearing from all our candidates as they lay out their visions for Mainers. But make no mistake, simply voting is not enough. We’ll need every Democrat to rally behind our eventual nominee and put us in the strongest possible position to defeat Susan Collins and retake the Senate.”
