Augusta, Maine – In case you missed it, Susan Collins went scorched earth on NPR, accusing the network of a “partisan bent” to justify her support for stripping millions in funding.
NPR and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting serve critical functions for Mainers, particularly in rural areas. NPR manages the Public Radio Satellite System, which sends emergency alerts to local public radio stations nationwide when internet or cell connections fail. This has been critical in numerous natural disasters ranging from wildfires to hurricanes.
By a two-to-one ratio, Americans favor continuing federal funding for NPR and PBS.
Maine Democratic Party spokesperson Tommy Garcia:
“Susan Collins’ partisan attack on NPR is a threat to Maine communities that rely on the funding, coverage, and logistical support NPR and public broadcasting provides. Rural communities throughout Maine could see some of the greatest hits from this Collins-backed move, but she would rather score political points than stand up for Maine.”
