Bangor, Maine – In case you missed it, today Maine Democrats gathered outside Senator Susan Collins’ office in Bangor to call out her complicity in advancing and the eventual passage of the GOP’s budget bill that will have devastating consequences on Maine.

While highlighting the specific role Collins played in moving the bill forward, speakers also outlined specific consequences of the bill that Collins greenlit Republicans to pass.

Here are some key moments:

Maine Democratic Party Vice Chair Imke Schessler-Jandreau: “Susan Collins was the deciding vote in giving Trump and Senate Republicans the green light to pass a bill that will have devastating impacts on Maine and put Maine lives at risk. In the weeks leading up to the Senate considering the bill, Mainers begged Susan Collins to use her seniority and the power she likes to campaign on to stop this bill. She didn't. Susan Collins allowed this to happen. This will be damaging now, and it will be damaging for future generations – including for my own child.”

State Sen. Mike Tipping (D-Penobscot): “30,000 Mainers are slated to lose food for their families. 40,000 will lose heating assistance for their homes. And 50,000 will likely lose their health care. Millionaires will get new tax breaks and 4 trillion will be added to the national debt. Collins voted to advance this bill because she supported it.”

State Rep. Amy Roeder (D-Bangor): “The so-called ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ is not just bad policy, it's an act of violence against the people of Maine. It will rip health care away from your neighbors, food off your children's plates, and heat from your homes. This was enabled by people in power who had the chance to stop it and chose not to. Senator Susan Collins, this is on your doorstep. This is your fault. ”

State Rep. Jan Dodge (D-Belfast): “I am a teacher and a legislator. I taught for thirty-one years. The almost $1 trillion dollars cut from Medicaid and [...] SNAP, will increase the number of hungry and sick kids in Maine schools. These numbers and dollars represent people – the three year old who arrives at daycare without breakfast, the sixth grader with an uncontrollable cough who can’t concentrate on spelling words. Senator Collins, the budget bill that passed does not support Maine students. You were part of the problem.”

Mainer Shawn Yardley: “Collins understood the damage this would do in Maine. What did Senator Collins do to lead? To persuade? To truly push back on a bill she knew would harm Maine and Mainers? Did she call out the architects of this policy? Rally opposition? Speak plainly about the consequences? Of course, not. To paraphrase a senator I used to look up to, ‘I'm disappointed.’”
