With the Supreme Court set to hear a case that will determine the future of the Affordable Care Act, a new poll from Kaiser Family Foundation finds that 79% of Americans do not want the Court to overturn the law's protections for Americans with pre-existing conditions.
The lawsuit set to be heard by the Supreme Court one week after election day is only possible because Senator Collins cast a decisive vote for the 2017 tax giveaway. Donald Trump himself has said that his administration has a "very good chance" of winning the case, and his Justice Department is arguing that Senator Collins "knowingly voted to destroy" the ACA with her tax bill vote.
If the Republican-led and Trump-backed lawsuit is successful, 105,000 Mainers would lose their health care coverage, and federal protections for Americans with pre-existing conditions would be eliminated. But despite the potentially devastating consequences, Senator Collins has said that she does not regret her vote for the tax bill “at all.”
“Senator Collins was willing to put health care protections at risk for more than 100,000 Mainers so she could pass massive tax breaks for her uber-wealthy corporate donors,” said Maine Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Marra. “Maine people can see that Collins is willing to sell out their health care to the highest bidder, and they know that enough is enough. This November, they have a chance to vote her out and elect a Senator who will never stop fighting for affordable care for every Mainer.”
