Today, in recognition of Earth Day, Governor Mills announced millions in new funding for communities across the state to fight climate change. The funding is just the latest initiative stemming from Maine Won’t Wait, the Mills administration’s plan to reduce carbon emissions and prepare Maine communities for the effects of climate change. More than a year after announcing the plan, the state has made significant progress building new, green infrastructure, and is well on its way to hitting its aggressive climate goals and preparing Maine for the climate crisis to come.

However, with Paul LePage on the ballot this coming November, Maine’s plan to combat climate change and protect the future of our environment is at risk. LePage already spent eight years rooting for the climate crisis, obstructing action to address it, and encouraging offshore drilling and other actions that could degrade Maine’s environment even further. Now that Maine is finally moving forward on climate progress, LePage is running to tear it down once again.

“Governor Mills knows there is no better way to celebrate Earth Day than taking action to protect our environment and ensure a sustainable, livable future for all Mainers,” said Drew Gattine, Chair of the Maine Democratic Party. “In contrast, Paul LePage did little to address the climate crisis and, if re-elected, will stop our progress in its tracks and put our environment at risk again. For the sake of our vulnerable communities, our state, and our planet, we must re-elect Governor Mills.”
