It’s a big deal in Maine to flip a legislative seat from one party to another during a special election, but that’s just what happened in Augusta today. The next Representative for House District 86 will be Democrat Raegan LaRochelle, who currently serves her hometown of Augusta as an at-large city councilor. She defeated Republican James Orr in today’s special election.

The seat’s previous holder was a vocal and visible opponent to vaccine requirements. He resigned his seat in July to take a job outside of his district.

“We salute Raegan on a well-deserved win. She knocked on hundreds of doors and will be a powerful voice for Augusta residents,” said Drew Gattine, Maine Democratic Party Chair. “The results in District 86 speak for themselves. Voters want compassionate, thoughtful leaders who prioritize keeping Mainers safe and healthy and who want to invest in our state’s economy.”

The Maine Democratic Party also sends congratulations to newly elected municipal leaders in Portland, Lewiston, Bangor, South Portland, Auburn, Biddeford, Sanford, Saco, Westbrook, Augusta, and the many other cities and towns that held elections today.
