Augusta, Maine – Just one day after telling News Center Maine that a sixth term would be her last in the U.S. Senate if re-elected in November, Susan Collins is already walking it back.
Her campaign told the Portland Press Herald today that the comment was merely “an offhand comment, not a formal declaration” – undercutting her own words almost as soon as she said them.
Maine Democratic Party spokesperson Kristi Johnston:
“Susan Collins really got us with this one. One day she’s saying this would be her final term, the next day she’s already backing off it. Mainers are used to this play by now – she says one thing, then does another. She can’t even be up front about something as basic as how long she plans to serve and that tells Mainers everything they need to know.”
