This afternoon, the Maine Republican Party threatened one of Senator Collins’ Democratic challengers, releasing her personal cell phone in an email blast and encouraging supporters to harass and intimidate her and her family.
Despite the fact that Senator Collins claims she has paused her campaign and that this is “not a time for partisan politics,” her campaign has gone on the attack and her campaign staffers have even resorted to using expletives to publicly refer to one of her challengers.
The Maine Democratic Party is calling on the Maine Republican Party to publicly apologize for these dangerous tactics used against Maine House Speaker Sara Gideon immediately. No public official should have to experience threats and harassment.
“While Senator Collins tells reporters that she paused her campaign, she continues to attack Maine Democrats while the Maine Republican Party threatens one of her Democratic challengers,” said Maine Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Marra. “It is beyond the pale to resort to threats and intimidation tactics, and the Maine Republican Party should publicly apologize for their dangerous action immediately.”
