Collins voted against regulating for profit colleges, has accepted the maximum contribution from the head of their chief lobbying organization

Senator Susan Collins has a record of shielding for-profit colleges from regulation and a long history of voting against relief for student borrowers. In 2017, Collins cast two deciding votes to advance Betsy DeVos’ nomination and only opposed her after it was clear her vote would not matter.

Collins voted against a regulation aimed at holding for-profit colleges accountable for defrauding students and has since accepted the maximum contribution from the head of a former for-profit college, who served as the chairman of the for-profit college sector’s chief lobbying organization.

Here are the facts about Senator Collins’ record on failing to stand up for higher education students:

  • Senator Collins cast two deciding votes to advance Betsy DeVos’s nomination, then got a hall pass from Mitch McConnell to vote against her nomination on the floor after it was clear that her vote would not matter.

  • Senator Collins repeatedly opposed student loan refinancing and has voted six times against lower student loan rates.
