Today’s dissent is further evidence that Collins misled Mainers about Kavanaugh’s stance on LGBTQ+ equality

In her infamous floor speech defending her decision to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, Senator Susan Collins argued that Kavanaugh would defend LGBTQ+ rights. But today, Kavanaugh issued a dissenting opinion arguing that it should be legal for employers to fire people based on their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Kavanaugh opposed the majority ruling to protect LGBTQ+ Americans from employment discrimination, writing that the decision was a “mistake of history and sociology.”

Despite Collins’ recent claims to be an ally of the LGBTQ+ community, Kavanaugh is just one of dozens of Trump judicial nominees that Collins has confirmed who are hostile to LGBTQ+ equality and reproductive rights. Rather than taking meaningful action to hold Trump accountable for his repeated attacks on LGBTQ+ rights, she has continued to rubber stamp his takeover of our courts with extreme right-wing judges.

“Today’s ruling is a welcome victory for LGBTQ+ Mainers, but Justice Kavanaugh’s dissenting opinion is a chilling reminder that many of the judges Senator Collins has confirmed to lifetime seats on the federal bench are hostile to equality for all,” said Maine Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Marra. “Don’t let Collins’ empty words fool you; her votes to confirm anti-equality judges prove that she’s no ally to Maine’s LGBTQ+ community.”
