Despite promises of a “terrific,” “phenomenal,” and “fantastic” health care plan, none has ever materialized

Since the early days of his 2016 campaign, Donald Trump has been promising Americans an alternative health care plan to replace the Affordable Care Act, but more than four years have passed and Americans are still waiting for the Trump Health Care Plan. Instead, Senator Susan Collins has made it possible for Trump to move full steam ahead to dismantle the Affordable Care Act, which would end protections for Americans with pre-existing conditions and gut health care for nearly 100,000 Mainers.

Trump has repeatedly promised that he would soon unveil a superior plan to replace the ACA, often with specific timelines. But since the beginning of his presidency, he’s broken each and every one of those promises. In 2017, after Republicans failed to pass an incredibly unpopular health care bill that would have made cuts to Medicaid while cutting taxes on the wealthy, he kept up the drum beat that he would soon bring Americans better health care. In 2019, Trump promised the Republican Party would become the “party of healthcare,” and said a health care plan would be coming shortly--but none did. As recently as July, Trump said a “full and complete” health care plan would be coming “in two weeks.” Unsurprisingly, no health care plan materialized.

Now, the Trump’s administration has put off proposing an alternative health care plan until after the election. But the truth is, Trump continues to push back the goal posts on delivering a plan because he doesn’t have one, and never will. Instead, Trump keeps pushing to dismantle the Affordable Care Act, and just one week after the election, the Supreme Court will hear his lawsuit seeking to invalidate the entire law, where his legal team will argue that Senator Collins “knowingly voted to destroy the health care law.”

“Trump has spent his presidency promising Americans that we’re right around the corner from phenomenal health care, but he’s never told us how we’re going to get there,” said Maine Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Marra. “The truth is that his only health care plan is to gut protections for pre-existing conditions, rip away health care for tens of thousands of Mainers and millions of Americans, and leave each of us to deal with the consequences. We need Joe Biden in the White House to make sure that every Mainer and American gets the health care they need.”
