Collins Used to Speak Out Against Trump’s Attacks On American Heroes in 2016, Now, Trump Endorses Her and She’s Silent

It has been two days since The Atlantic published their bombshell report about Donald Trump’s disparagement of fallen American soldiers and wounded veterans. The report has since been confirmed by both The Associated Press and Fox News, but Senator Susan Collins still refuses to repudiate Donald Trump in light of these remarks.

In 2016, Senator Collins cited Trump’s attacks on a gold star family and John McCain’s service as reasons that “caused” her to decide she “could not support his candidacy.” But four years later, in the face of more attacks on our nation's veterans and those who sacrificed their lives defending our freedoms, Senator Collins has remained silent on Trump’s remarks. For the last 629 days, she has refused to even say whether she thinks he should be reelected.

“Mainers need to know whether Senator Collins believes that a man who calls our nation's war dead ‘losers’ deserves a second term as Commander in Chief,” said Maine Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Marra. “Collins’ continued refusal to admit her support for Trump in light of these comments is shameful, but she has made a craven calculation that her odds of reelection are higher if she doesn’t tell the truth. Her silence is complicity, and Mainers deserve so much better.”
