Collins has been a stalwart vote for Trump and has refused to say whether she will vote for his reelection for 656 days
Today, Senator Collins applauded herself for her opposition to Donald Trump in 2016, claiming her op-ed outlining her disapproval of her party’s nominee was “courageous” and anyone who thinks otherwise is “sadly mistaken.”
In contrast to this supposed “courage” that Senator Collins boasts about from years ago, she’s now a Trump loyalist who plays political games to keep her seat in Washington. For the last 656 days, Senator Collins has refused to tell Mainers the truth about who she’s voting for solely because she isn’t “courageous” enough to face the political fallout of admitting her support for Trump – even as he’s continued the same behavior that she cited in her 2016 op-ed.
Senator Collins has continued to be a loyal vote as Trump has mocked veterans and servicemembers, undermined our national security, and stoked division and violence – but she is still refusing to tell Mainers whether she’ll vote for him to continue leading the country.
Senator Collins has voted with Trump 94 percent of the time, more than any other president in her career, and has delivered him pivotal votes for his top priorities – including the 2017 corporate tax giveaway and his takeover of the judiciary, confirming hundreds of Trump’s right wing, unqualified, judges to lifetime seats.
“The irony here is outrageous--Senator Collins proudly boasting her opposition to Donald Trump in 2016 while actively enabling him now as he continues his dangerous behavior,” said Maine Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Marra. “There’s no question that she supports Trump, but she’s still refusing to face the political consequences and tell Mainers the truth. Where’s all that ‘courage’ now, Senator Collins?”
