Westbrook, MAINE - Just as Democrats warned, six months after passing a massive tax cut for corporations and the wealthy, Republicans in Congress are now taking aim at Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security, proposing billions of dollars in cuts in a budget released last night.

Maine Democratic Party Chairman Phil Bartlett issued the following statement in response:

“This budget proposal is not only an absolute disaster, it’s a punch in the gut from Republicans who voted to explode the national debt to help corporations and the wealthiest and then try to balance it on the backs of Maine people -- all while jacking up health care costs. Maine people deserve better, but instead, we have Congressman Poliquin.

“Congressman Poliquin voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act, which would have kicked millions of people off of their insurance and increased costs for everyone else. He then voted to sabotage the Affordable Care Act as a part of a $1.4 trillion tax cut that prioritized the wealthy and corporations over hard-working middle-class Mainers. And now, because of votes like his, Republicans are moving to try to cut trillions from Medicare and Medicaid and billions more from Social Security and education and job training.

“The votes Congressman Poliquin has taken in Congress are not only downright harmful to Maine people, but they set the stage for dangerous proposals like this that will further hurt folks across the state.”
