Over and over, Senator Collins has failed to take action to fight for the policies that Mainers need, opting instead to express her disappointment with an ineffective letter of concern. This week, Maine Democrats will highlight the issues where Collins has refused to back up the words of her letters with action.

When the horrifying truth about the Trump administration’s abhorrent family separation policy began to come to light in the summer of 2018, Senator Susan Collins wrote three letters of concern to the administration. But more than two years later, Collins’s strategy of sending strongly worded letters has once again proven entirely ineffective.

Collins has failed to follow through with any concrete action to stop the family separation policy. She refused to support an initial Democratic bill that would have stopped the separation of families at the border, saying it was “too broad.” She was also unable to bring her Republican colleagues together to take action and eventually admitted that her efforts to broker any kind of compromise on the issue had “petered out.”

Senator Collins failed to put a stop to the unspeakably cruel policy of family separations and they continue to this day. Since the Trump administration claimed that it “ended” the policy, more than 1,100 children at the border have been separated from their families.

“When the Trump administration’s barbaric family separation policy came to light, Mainers expected our Senator to take action, but instead Senator Collins sent a few feckless letters,” said Maine Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Marra. “Two years later, families are still being torn apart at our border, and Senator Collins has still done nothing to stop it. We need a Senator who will fight to put a stop to unspeakable cruelty, but Collins has proven that she’ll never hold Trump accountable.”
