Maine’s Democratic candidates for Governor, meanwhile, have unequivocally stated their opposition to the harmful bill.

Augusta, MAINE– Last night, Republican gubernatorial candidate Mary Mayhew declared her support for the Republican tax bill that is estimated to ultimately raise taxes on Mainers, increase health care costs, and blow a massive hole in the deficit. The other Republican candidates – Shawn Moody, Ken Fredette, Mike Thibodeau and Garrett Mason – continue to refuse to take a public position on the bill. Meanwhile, Maine’s Democratic candidates for Governor have spoken loudly and clearly, declaring yesterday their opposition to the harmful, partisan bill.

Chairman Bartlett released the following statement in response:

“Shawn Moody, Ken Fredette, Mike Thibodeau, and Garrett Mason continue to be shamefully silent on the GOP tax bill, hoping that they can simply skate by and that the press won’t ask them where they stand on this massive giveaway to the wealthy. But Mainers deserve to know: do they agree with Donald Trump, Paul LePage, and Mary Mayhew about this bill, which is expected to raise taxes on Mainers? Or do they believe, like our Democratic candidates, that this bill doesn’t do nearly enough for those who deserve it most – hardworking, middle-class Mainers - and that we should prioritize a simpler, fairer tax code

“Mary Mayhew spent six years slashing services for low-income Mainers in the name of fiscal responsibility, but she’s apparently more than ready to blow a massive trillion dollar hole in the deficit as long as it benefits the wealthy. Her support of this terrible, partisan bill just demonstrates where her real priorities are – with Paul LePage, Donald Trump, and the wealthy few, not hardworking, middle-class Mainers like she claims.”
