Westbrook, MAINE – Rather than speak out against the long history of hateful and inappropriate remarks made by State Representative Larry Lockman and Waterville Mayor Nick Isgro, the Maine Republican Party this past weekend decided to instead reward the two with on-stage roles at their convention. Maine Democratic Party Chairman Phil Bartlett issued the following statement:
“Time and again, the Maine Republican Party has had the opportunity to reject the hateful rhetoric of politicians like Larry Lockman and Nick Isgro. But rather than do so and take a stand for decency, the Maine GOP decided to reward Lockman and Isgro with featured roles at their convention this weekend. Doing so sends a clear message to the people of Maine that the Maine GOP not only tolerates their backward behavior, but embraces it.
“The vast majority of Republicans in Maine are good people who don’t support the type of terrible things Representative Lockman and Mayor Isgro have said. The Maine Republican Party should have followed their lead – but at least we know where the party stands now.”
State Representative Larry Lockman has a decades-long history of extreme remarks, including speaking out against a woman’s right to make her own health care choices by suggesting that a man should thus also “be free to use his superior strength to force himself on a woman.” He also recently said the left is conducting “a war on whites”.
Mayor Nick Isgro’s tweet in which he tells Parkland shooting survivor David Hogg to “eat it” also helped unveil his own long history of repulsive online commentary, including defending accused child molester Roy Moore and a vile reference to anti-sexual harassment legislation. Isgro is now facing a recall election.
