Westbrook, MAINE - Today, Governor Paul LePage issued a veto of a bipartisan bill that would ban conversion therapy for certain professions and establish penalties for those who continue the practice.

Maine Democratic Party Chairman Phil Bartlett issued the following statement:

“Governor LePage’s decision to veto this bill is just plain wrong. The harmful practice of conversion therapy has no place in our society, let alone a medical or clinical setting. By passing this bill, a bipartisan majority of legislators sent a powerful message to our LGBTQ+ youth: you will be supported and protected. Unfortunately, Governor LePage couldn’t bring himself to send the same message when it came time to sign the bill into law.”
