Today, the Maine Democratic Party announced it will close Friday in recognition of Juneteenth, the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States.

“The trauma Black, Indigenous, People of Color are experiencing across the nation isn’t new, but the recent murders of Black Americans by the police and the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on Black and Brown communities are laying bare that our country has not adequately reckoned with our history of racism and the ongoing inequalities for marginalized groups in every facet of our daily lives,” said Kathleen Marra, Chair of the Maine Democratic Party. “Giving our staff, supporters, and volunteers space to honor Juneteenth, educate ourselves, take part in celebrations, and acknowledge the significance of this historical day is the right thing to do.”
