Vice President Biden, Sen. Sanders, Sen. Warren earn Maine’s pledged delegates to National Convention

Following the Secretary of State’s certification of Maine’s Presidential Primary results, the Maine Democratic Party today announced it has certified the state’s allocations of delegates to the Democratic National Convention.

Maine’s 24 pledged delegates to the National Convention, to be held the week of August 17 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, were allocated proportionally according to the results of each congressional district and statewide. Per DNC rules, presidential candidates that meet the threshold and qualify to receive at-large and party leader and elected official (“PLEO”) delegates are allocated those delegates based on the statewide results of the primary. However, the share of delegates awarded to presidential candidates that suspend their campaigns prior to selection of those delegates are proportionally divided among the remaining candidates who also meet the statewide threshold. A presidential candidate that meets the threshold in a congressional district is entitled to their proportionate share of delegates, regardless of their current status as a presidential candidate.

Candidates needed to receive at least 15 percent of the votes cast to be awarded any delegates:

  • Vice President Joe Biden: 16 total delegates
  • Senator Bernie Sanders: 6 total delegates
  • Senator Elizabeth Warren: 2 total delegates

The full National Delegate allocations breakdown can be found here.

Last week, the Maine Democratic Party (MDP) announced that due to threats posed by the coronavirus, the 2020 State Convention has been canceled and will be replaced by remote voting for delegates to the Democratic National Convention. The Democratic National Committee (DNC) approved an updated Delegate Selection Plan to allow remote elections for Maine’s national delegates, presidential electors, and DNC representatives. The MDP will also be holding remote elections for seats on the Democratic State Committee.

The updated Delegate Selection Plan approved by the DNC can be found on the Maine Democratic Party’s website here.

Decisions regarding other convention activities will be determined at a later date. As plans for remote voting are further finalized, more details will be made publicly available.
