Westbrook, MAINE - In case you missed it, as the Maine Legislature considers conforming to the federal tax code, Speaker of the House Sara Gideon and Senate Democratic Leader Troy Jackson published a joint op-ed in the Bangor Daily News highlighting Democrats’ efforts to fight for a fair tax system that strengthens the middle-class and supports small businesses.

“Democrats will only support a tax conformity package that will grow and strengthen the middle class, while addressing the significant challenges facing our state,” Speaker Gideon and Leader Jackson wrote. “At the heart of it, Maine is all about valuing our working families, our seniors and small businesses. Our tax code should be, too.”

The tax proposal offered by Governor LePage and backed by Republicans would import the GOP tax scam straight from Washington by implementing policies that mostly benefit big corporations, the wealthiest, and a select few Maine families that would stand to gain millions from tax-free, multi-million dollar inheritances. On the other hand, Democrats in the legislature, led by Gideon and Jackson, are working hard to advance a plan that would focus on property tax relief, small business tax credits, and paid family leave.
