Senator Susan Collins continues to lob baseless attacks on Speaker Sara Gideon, claiming she’s refusing to reconvene the Legislature when it’s  Collins’ Maine Republican allies blocking the legislature from returning for a special session.  Now, a We The People PAC invitation has revealed that Collins’ own PAC is sponsoring fundraisers for the very same lawmakers who blocked the special session.

According to Maine Ethics Commission statutes and rules, political action committees like the We the People PAC cannot fundraise from registered lobbyists or their clients while the Legislature is in session. That means that today’s fundraiser wouldn’t have even been allowed to go forward unless legislative Republicans had rejected House Speaker Gideon and Senate President Jackson’s proposal to reconvene.

“This is beyond hypocritical. While Senator Collins’ campaign continues to lob transparently disingenuous attacks at Speaker Gideon, her PAC is sponsoring events for the legislators who are actually responsible for blocking a special session” said Maine Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Marra. “Maine Republicans have made it clear that they’d rather fundraise with lobbyists at a golf course than get back to work for Maine people, and apparently Senator Collins has no problem with that--except when she can use it to lob false attacks at Sara Gideon.”
