Earlier this week, the Maine Republican Party released a proposed draft of its 2022 party platform, which promotes anti-abortion, anti-LGBTQ+, and anti-voting rights policies.

In response, Maine Democratic Party Chair Drew Gattine released the following statement:

“Over the last three years, Democrats in Maine have accomplished a lot. From expanding health care for more than 85,000 Mainers, to protecting reproductive rights, to investing in education and public schools, to fighting climate change, to expanding access to voting, Democrats are delivering the results Maine people want.

“But this important progress is now under threat.

“In their proposed party platform, the Maine GOP painted a clear picture of the all-out assault on the rights, health, and well-being of Maine’s people they will launch if given the chance.

“According to the platform, Maine Republicans want to take away access to health and reproductive care for Maine families. They want to make it more difficult for Maine voters to cast their ballots. They want to ignore the will of Maine voters and threaten the hard-fought freedoms of Maine’s LBGTQ+ community. And their chosen candidate to lead the charge for all these right-wing policies is none other than former Governor Paul LePage, who oversaw some of the darkest years in Maine’s history.

“This platform is just the latest evidence that LePage and the Maine GOP will only move Maine backwards. They must be defeated at the ballot box next year.”
