Today, in an interview with the Bangor Daily News, Senator Susan Collins claimed that she doesn’t “weigh the political consequences” when making decisions. But that completely contradicts her own stated reasoning for why she’s refused to be honest with Mainers about whether she supports Donald Trump’s reelection.

For the last 649 days, Senator Collins has refused to tell Mainers the truth about who she’s voting for because she is TERRIFIED of the political consequences of admitting her support for Trump. Collins has pointed to the fact that Trump is “very popular” in some parts of the state and “very unpopular” when dodging questions about her presidential vote, spelling out her craven political calculation to try to win reelection by playing both sides and never revealing her real position.

Refusing to admit her support for Donald Trump is hardly the only calculating political move Senator Collins has made this cycle; just this week, Republican strategists have celebrated her stance on the Supreme Court vacancy as an opportunity to “earn plaudits” from the voters on the left while appeasing her conservative base.

“Senator Collins herself has admitted that her refusal to be honest about her support for Donald Trump is a political calculation,” said Maine Democratic Party Executive Director Lisa Roberts. “After 24 years in Washington, Collins has become a master of the calculated political maneuver, so her assertion that she’s never weighed political consequences is a disingenuous disservice to Maine voters who expert her to tell us the truth.”
