Sierra Club joins LCV Action Fund and NRDC Action Fund in endorsing Speaker Sara Gideon

Today, the Sierra Club announced their endorsement of Sara Gideon for U.S. Senate, becoming the third major national environmental group to endorse Gideon over Senator Susan Collins this cycle. After nearly four years of Collins backing Donald Trump’s dangerous assault on our most important environmental protections, leading advocacy organizations have been compelled to come out against her this year. Even groups that backed Senator Collins in previous elections, including the League of Conservation Voters and the Natural Resources Defense Council, have flipped to support Sara Gideon.

It’s not hard to see why environmental advocates have come to the conclusion that Senator Collins can no longer be trusted to take action on the climate crisis and fight for our air and water. She’s been a key vote to help Donald Trump install climate deniers to lead the agencies responsible for our nation’s environmental policies and she’s voted to confirm judges who oppose environmental protections to lifetime seats on the federal bench. Even after she repeatedly promised Mainers that she would fight to protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Senator Collins voted to turn it into an industrial oil field with her support for the 2017 GOP tax bill.

“It’s clear that Senator Collins isn’t willing to fight to protect our environment when it’s inconvenient for Donald Trump or her corporate special interest backers,” said Maine Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Marra. “We’re thrilled that leading environmental groups agree: Sara Gideon is the champion Mainers need fighting for our health and our future in the U.S. Senate.”
