Trump administration says Collins “knowingly voted to destroy” the ACA--including its protections for Americans with pre-existing conditions

Senator Susan Collins’ latest campaign ad is an obvious attempt to paper over her record of putting Mainers’ health care at risk, and it’s packed with misleading claims about her record on pre-existing conditions. The truth is that Senator Collins opposed the Affordable Care Act -- which guaranteed coverage protections for Americans with preexisting conditions -- “from the very beginning.” And after the ACA became law, Collins voted at least a dozen times to repeal or undermine it.

Now, thanks to Senator Collins’ vote for the GOP tax bill, the ACA is at risk again. One week after Election Day, the Supreme Court will hear arguments in the Republican lawsuit to strike down the ACA, where the Trump administration’s legal team will argue that Collins “knowingly voted to destroy” the health care law by repealing the ACA’s individual mandate.

“Senator Collins knew that her vote for the tax bill would put Mainers’ health care and protections for people with preexisting conditions at risk, but she was willing to throw us under the bus so her corporate backers could get a huge tax break,” said Maine Democratic Party Executive Director Lisa Roberts. “Don’t let her deceptive ads pull the wool over your eyes--Senator Collins has never been a champion for our health care.”
