Maine Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Marra on Mass Shootings

Maine Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Marra released the following statement on this week’s mass shootings in Gilroy, CA, El Paso, TX, and Dayton, OH:

1 week, 38 dead, 80 injured. In the span of one week, three individual gunmen took 38 lives and injured 80 more. The victims were daughters, sons, brothers, sisters, husbands, and wives who had the audacity to attend their community’s garlic festival, go shopping, and enjoy a popular nightlife spot. No words can describe the irrevocable damage this has caused each affected community and the nation as a whole.

“Nobody wants to fear for their children’s safety at school. Nobody wants to avoid community events because they could be a target. Nobody wants to look over their shoulder while shopping for back-to-school supplies. This is not a partisan political issue, but it is an issue that all Mainers and all Americans must confront, because this cannot become the new normal. The Maine Democratic Party is committed to being part of the solution.

“Our hearts go out to the victims, families, first responders, and all those affected by the shootings in Gilroy, El Paso, and Dayton.”
