Donald Trump has repeatedly broken his promises to stop the flow of manufacturing jobs overseas, adopting policies that have made it easier for his wealthy donors to offshore jobs even as he proclaims that he “believes in two simple rules: Buy American and hire American.”

Trump has repeatedly pledged that under his administration, more products would be made in the US. He’s signed a series of executive orders, including a “Buy American, hire American” order. But poor timing and lack of enforcement mechanisms rendered the orders entirely symbolic.

In spite of his promises, manufacturing in the US now represents the smallest share of the economy in 72 years, and Trump’s policies have actually accelerated offshoring. In his first year alone, nearly 200,000 American jobs moved overseas, while his 2017 tax law ignored the causes of offshoring and actually incentivized companies to move even more factories outside the US.

Meanwhile, Joe Biden unveiled a plan to ensure the future is “made in all of America” by all of America’s workers. Biden’s comprehensive manufacturing and innovation strategy will marshall the resources of the federal government in ways that we have not seen since World War II.

“Donald Trump promised that he would rebuild American manufacturing, but all he’s done is made it easier for his allies at big corporations to move jobs overseas,” said Maine Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Marra. “Trump’s corruption and incompetence has led to one more broken promise where his wealthy donors can line their pockets at the expense of Maine workers. Joe Biden has a real plan to Buy American, and that’s why we need him in the White House.”
