Tom Allen Talks Health Care, Iraq, Energy and the Economy; Susan Collins Eats Chili and Bakes Staff CoffeecakeThroughout the month of August and into September, U.S. Senate nominee Tom Allen talked to Mainers across the state about today’s most important issues: heating oil costs, health care, jobs, and how to bring our troops safely and responsibly home from Iraq. Just last week, Allen drew about 120 people to South Paris to discuss energy and the economy at a community supper with special guest Senator Jon Tester of Montana. On Saturday, he and Senator Sherrod Brown of Ohio hosted town hall forums on energy, the economy and jobs, and health care—drawing crowds of 70 and more in Biddeford, Lewiston and Bangor. Meanwhile, Susan Collins has been touring the state, as well, with a glaring difference. While Allen discusses the issues, Collins does her best to avoid talking about them. Recent coverage of Collins includes eating chili at a Legion hall, thanking motorcyclists for an escort of her campaign “motorcade,” and baking a blueberry “buckle” for her staff. Thanks, Tom, for taking the important issues head-on! And for fun, here is just a partial list of the communities that Tom has visited recently: Wilton, Livermore Falls, Lovell, South Paris, Turner, Westbrook, Bucksport, Camden, Rockland, Brooklin, Mt. Desert Island, Brunswick, Bath, Biddeford, Saco, Kittery, Sanford, Bangor, South Portland, Augusta, Sidney, Waterville, Andover, Rumford, Lewiston, Auburn, Walpole, Scarborough, Springvale, Windham, Cape Neddick, York, Wells, Kennebunk, Jay, Arrowsic, Millinocket, Eddington, Bar Harbor, Hancock, Machias, Belfast, Brooksville, Castine, Farmington, Hanover, Skowhegan, Fairfield, and Fryeburg. |

Chellie Pingree Visiting Local Organizations, Businesses, University of MaineThroughout her campaign, Chellie has traveled across the 1st District visiting businesses and talking to workers about the challenges brought on by high energy prices, a weak economy and rising health care costs. Last week, Chellie visited Martin's Point Health Care to talk about the issues facing the industry. This week, she'll sit down with the Maine Innkeepers Association at their board meeting to hear about the topics that are important to their members. Chellie also believes Maine is well-poised to take advantage of new sources of clean energy from wind, tidal and wood---and the research and development that is going on at the University of Maine is a critical part of that emerging technology. Next Monday, Chellie will visit the University of Maine to see some of that research up close and learn what they are doing to help Maine achieve energy independence. |
