Maine Supreme Court Rules in favor of MDP Chairman John Knutson |
Maine Supreme Court Rules in favor of MDP Chairman John KnutsonAfter persisting with his claim that prospective Independent Senate candidate Herbert Hoffman did not obtain a sufficient number of petition signatures, MDP Chairman John Knutson’s voice was heard this past Monday when the Maine Supreme Court ruled in his favor. The court ruled that Mr. Hoffman violated the legal requirement that he witness individuals sign petitions, knocking the number of valid signatures he’d obtained under the required 4,000 threshold. The case was very important for the U.S. Senate election in November. Because Tom Allen’s race against Susan Collins could come down to a few percentage points, we did not want the outcome affected by someone who (intentionally or not) did not play by the same rules as everyone else to get on the ballot. We also felt strongly that the lower court’s ruling could have dramatically changed Maine’s process for getting one’s name on the ballot.
