Maine Supreme Court Rules in favor of MDP Chairman John Knutson

After persisting with his claim that prospective Independent Senate candidate Herbert Hoffman did not obtain a sufficient number of petition signatures, MDP Chairman John Knutson’s voice was heard this past Monday when the Maine Supreme Court ruled in his favor.

The court ruled that Mr. Hoffman violated the legal requirement that he witness individuals sign petitions, knocking the number of valid signatures he’d obtained under the required 4,000 threshold.

The case was very important for the U.S. Senate election in November. Because Tom Allen’s race against Susan Collins could come down to a few percentage points, we did not want the outcome affected by someone who (intentionally or not) did not play by the same rules as everyone else to get on the ballot. We also felt strongly that the lower court’s ruling could have dramatically changed Maine’s process for getting one’s name on the ballot.

Social Workers Endorse Chellie Pingree

This week Chellie received the endorsement of the National Association of Social Workers--the organization representing hundreds of thousands of social workers across the country and 3,600 in the First District alone. "I'm honored to have the endorsement of the Social Workers," Chellie said. "It signals that a community deeply engaged in social justice, wellness and civil justice thinks I am the right person to represent Maine’s First District. I know that NASW is a very well respected organization and the Maine NASW community is engaged and active."

Chellie worked with the Maine NASW community throughout her time in the State Senate, where she sponsored or cosponsored bills to extend family leave, extend Medicaid coverage, assure equitable delivery of mental health services and fought for many other issues important to the that community.
