Trump HHS Secretary Price’s Actions, Words Don’t Line Up On Opioid Crisis

Augusta, Maine – Maine Democratic Party Chairman Phil Bartlett today released the following statement on Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price’s visit to Maine to discuss the opioid crisis.

“The devastating opioid crisis has claimed lives in every corner of our country, and here in Maine we are losing people every day. Addressing this epidemic must be a bi-partisan effort, and in that spirit we thank Secretary Price for his visit to our state.

“That being said, the Trump Administration’s actions thus far have not reflected their promise to address the opioid crisis. TrumpCare would cut Medicaid, making it harder for the most vulnerable Mainers to access treatment. And President Trump’s proposed budget contains a 95% cut to the Office of National Drug Control Policy, the lead agency addressing the opioid epidemic.

“Mainers struggling through opioid addiction should not be used as public relations props while the Trump administration cuts treatment funds behind our backs.”

“To add insult to injury, the Trump Administration is cutting these funds to pay for more tax breaks for millionaires and billionaires. That is unconscionable. We call on Secretary Price, the Trump Administration and their allies in Congress to restore proposed cuts to Medicaid and the Office of National Drug Control Policy, and to honor their promise to countless Mainers whose lives depend on this critical treatment.”
