President Trump Betrays Maine Communities Ravaged by Opioid Epidemic

AUGUSTA, Maine – Maine Democratic Party Chair Phil Bartlett today released the following statement in response to news that President Trump is proposing a 95% funding cut to the lead agency combating the opioid crisis, the Office of National Drug Control Policy. This proposal directly contradicts President Trump’s repeated campaign promise to help communities ravaged by opioid addiction.

Maine Democratic Party Chair Phil Bartlett said, “President Trump promised to help the many communities in Maine devastated by the opioid epidemic. This is a betrayal of massive proportions, and a slap in the face to Maine families who believed Trump would help solve this crisis.

“First, the Republican Party jeopardized services for people in need of opioid treatment with their ill-conceived disaster of a health care bill. Now President Trump proposes cutting funding for the main office in charge of combating the opioid epidemic almost entirely. I hope that Congressional Republicans grow the conscience they lacked in yesterday’s TrumpCare vote, and do not allow this heartless proposal to become a reality. Countless lives in Maine depend on it.”
