Program Overview

The Maine Democratic Party is looking for Maine‚Äôs enthusiastic, politically-minded, future leaders for our Summer Internship Program! Summer interns will get hands-on experience doing substantive work while learning the fundamentals of working in campaign politics. Interns will choose a focus in either organizing and outreach, finance, or communication, and develop key skills to prepare for future political opportunities in their focus. While each focus will offer a unique learning experience, interns will get to know all MDP staffers and gain exposure to all departments through brown bag lunch sessions, professional development workshops, and all-hands-on-deck events and projects. By the end of the summer, each intern should feel ready to jump onto the campaign trail or into a progressive organization. 

All internships are based in Augusta, Maine and are unpaid. Travel for assignments will be reimbursed. Part-time interns will be expected to commit at least 15 hours per week. Full-time interns will be expected to commit at least 30 hours per week.

Areas of Focus

Organizing & Outreach:

The Organizing/Outreach Team is responsible for developing grassroots volunteer infrastructure, executing voter contact efforts, and managing the MDP's "Run Local" program that trains Democrats to run for local office. An intern can expect to learn about key organizing ideas such as: volunteer development and team building, coalition building, data management, and voter contact. Organizing/Outreach interns should love working with people, be goals-oriented, and be able to juggle multiple priorities at once.

Responsibilities will include: 

Assisting with trainings for volunteers and local candidates across the state 
Recruiting, training, and managing volunteers 
Participating in call time at least 2-3x per week to targeted groups of voters or volunteers 
Assisting with outreach to allied organizations statewide 

 

Finance:

The Finance Team is responsible for raising all funds to support the staff and programs of the Maine Democratic Party. An intern can expect to learn about fundraising through email, mail, and events, as well as, donor research and cultivation. Finance interns should have superior project management skills, the ability to build and maintain strong relationships, and excellent written and oral communications abilities.

Responsibilities will include: 

Participating in call time 2-3x per week with low and mid-range dollar donors and
Managing NGP donor database, conducting research on current, new, and potential contributors
Assisting in prep and coordination of several large-scale fundraising events
Assisting with large-scale personalized fundraising mail solicitations 

 

Communications:

The Communications Team is responsible for managing all aspects of communications strategy, messaging, rapid response, and digital operations for the Maine Democratic Party. An intern can expect to learn about communications through writing for e-mail, earned and social media, content creation and research. Communications interns should be quick thinking, creative, and possess excellent written and oral communications abilities. Photography or graphic design experience a plus.

Responsibilities will include: 

Assisting with the writing, production, publishing and content across email, social media, and websites
Monitoring social media & providing research support for digital communication campaigns 
Providing general support functions to the Communications Manager
