Young people and all members of the community are invited this Sunday, August 10th, to Lobster in the Rough in York for the “Let’s Wake It Up” Vote ’08 Voter Registration and Community Rally.

The event is geared toward arming young people with candidate information and voter registration cards, along with the help of four bands: local rock band Egotripmusic; Jenny O, a singer-songwriter from L.A. ; country/blues artist Elsa Cross and popstar Tino.

Candidates in attendance include Rep. and U.S. Senate candidate Tom Allen; young Maine State House District #144 candidate Jordan Landry; Henry Beck, the young candidate for Maine State House District #76; Chuck Ott, retired school superintendant and community activist; and State Representative Dawn Hill from District #149.

The event is free and open to the public. Lobster in the Rough is located on Route 1 in York. The event takes places from 1:00-4:00 p.m. this Sunday, August 10th.

Chellie Discusses Financial Access to Higher Education

Chellie Pingree will be participating in a symposium hosted by the Maine Compact for Higher Education this Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at USM's Abromson Center. Chellie has been deeply involved in education issues--dating back to the time she served as the Chair of the School Board in North Haven.

In the State Senate, Chellie introduced and passed the landmark "Parents as Scholars" legislation. The program has helped make higher education more accessible for adults and allowed participants to become independent and transition off of public assistance. “Parents as Scholars” has become a template for similar programs across the country. At the Higher Education Symposium, Chellie will be talking about the role of the federal government in ensuring financial access to higher education.

Party Time!

The National Democratic Convention is just around the corner. And you can take part from the comfort of your very own home on Thursday August 28th, when Barack Obama makes history by accepting his party's nomination as the Democratic candidate for President.

The Maine Democratic Party is looking for enthusiastic Democrats across the state to host a "watch party" at their home as we celebrate this historic occasion. Just before Sen. Obama takes the stage, hosts and their guests will be joined via conference call by special guests live from Denver, the site of this year's national convention.

Anyone interested in hosting a party or learning more should contact Erin Barnes at 207-772-4353 or ebarnes@mainedems.org. Our goal is to convene 20 house parties on Thursday, August 28th from 7-9 p.m. Party hosts’ goal is to raise $500 toward our election effort November 4th.

Tom Allen Unveils First Piece of Plan to Grow the Economy

Congressman and U.S. Senate nominee Tom Allen unveiled the first piece of his plan for a stronger economy with a focus on investments in infrastructure during a press conference at the Saco Train Station Monday. Throughout the month of August, Allen will discuss his economic plan called "A Modern Maine Economy: Blending Fair Trade, 21st Century Technology and Yankee Ingenuity" in stops across the state.

"We need a national infrastructure policy that helps Maine with innovative solutions for our aging network of roads, bridges, rail, airports, harbors and water systems," he added. "We need a policy that invests in broadband capabilities, especially for our rural communities. We need a national policy to strengthen infrastructure so that our economy has the underpinning it needs, and I have one."

Read more about Tom Allen’s plan for Maine’s infrastructure.

Congratulations, team, on another amazing week. Volunteers across the state actually talked to more than 10,000 people last week alone! Keep up the dials, keep pounding the pavement, and keep spreading the TRUTH about our fabulous candidates.
