Mike is the second of six children. He was raised in Medway and attended Schenck High School in East Millinocket. After graduation, Mike followed in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, gaining employment at the Great Northern Paper Company. He is a 30 year employee of GNP and a member of PACE Local #1-0037.

Citing a desire to help clean up the badly polluted Penobscot River near his home, Mike first ran for and was elected to the Maine House of Representatives in 1980 where he went on to serve seven consecutive terms. In 1994, he defeated a millionaire incumbent in his first bid for the Maine Senate, despite huge Republican victories across the country.

In December 2000, Mike was unanimously elected President of the Maine Senate, despite an even split of 17 Democrats, 17 Republicans and 1 Independent. Referring to this career in the Legislature, the Portland Press Herald described Mike as being “the first legislator to come to work in the morning and the last to leave at night.”

In Congress, Mike serves on the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, where he has helped secure millions of dollars for Maine’s vital transportation needs. Additionally, Mike serves on the House Committee on Small Business. During his first term, Mike formed the first-ever Labor and Working Families Caucus which, with over 75 members, is leading the fight for fairer trade and economic policies to better the lives of America’s working families and small businesses.

Mike is also working to lower prescription drug costs for all Americans through his America Rx legislation and is the sponsor of a constitutional amendment to protect Social Security. As Chair of the Veterans’ Health Subcommittee, Mike is widely praised as a champion for veterans and is fighting to ensure our men and women in uniform get the benefits they deserve.
